ADOLFO SUÁREZ OBITUARY IN THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS

Adolfo Suárez, Spain’s first elected prime minister after the Franco dictatorship and a key figure in the country’s transition back to democracy, died here on Sunday, March 23rd . He was 81.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

  Belle is a girl who is dissatisfied with life in a small provincial French town, constantly trying to fend off the misplaced "affections" of conceited Gaston. The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love. The one way he could break the spell was to learn to love another and earn her love in return before the last petal from hos enchanted rose fell, which would bloom until his twenty-first birthday. But who could ever learn to love a beast?

Made of Honor (2008)

Made of Honor revolves around Tom and Hannah, who have been platonic friends for 10 years. He's a serial dater, while she wants marriage but hasn't found Mr. Right. Just as Tom is starting to think that he is relationship material after all, Hannah gets engaged. When she asks Tom to be her "maid" of honor, he reluctantly agrees just so he can attempt to stop the wedding and woo her.

French Kiss (1995)

Kate and Charlie have a perfect life planned out before them: buying a house, marriage, kids, the whole works. Kate's fear of flying keeps her in Canada while Charlie goes to Paris for a medical convention. While there Charlie is smitten by the lovely Juliette. He calls off the wedding with Kate and she nervously boards a plane to get him back. She ends up sitting next to the petty French thief Luc Teyssier. He hides a stolen necklace and smuggled grape vine in her bag to get it through customs. Her bag is stolen, the necklace apparently lost, and Kate and Luc head to Cannes -- Luc to find the necklace and Kate get Charlie back. Along the way, Kate and Luc begin having feelings for each other -- which change the course of their lives.

Kate and Leopold 

Kate and her actor brother live in N.Y. in the 21st Century. Her ex-boyfriend, Stuart, lives above her apartment. Stuart finds a space near the Brooklyn Bridge where there is a gap in time. He goes back to the 19th Century and takes pictures of the place. Leopold -- a man living in the 1870s -- is puzzled by Stuart's tiny camera, follows him back through the gap, and they both ended up in the present day. Leopold is clueless about his new surroundings. He gets help and insight from Charlie who thinks that Leopold is an actor who is always in character. Leopold is a highly intelligent man and tries his best to learn and even improve the modern conveniences that he encounters.

PICTURE DICTATIONS

1st year students are learning and having fun doing picture dictations with María Cortés. In this activity the teacher or the students discribe simple scenes for the class or the partner to draw.

HOW TO BE AN ALIEN

3rd year students are working on How to be an Alien (1946), by George Mikes. It is a classic of British humour that has sold an incredible number of copies. It pokes gentle fun at the English and their relationship with foreigners, "alien" meaning in this context any non-English person. The book is characterised by much humour, affection and a total lack of rancour or bitterness. Mikes, an immigrant from Hungary, demonstrated not only his knowledge of English society but an insight into the English language.

3rd year students are going to translate some quotes from the book. The aim is to offer the best possible version of the texts into good Spanish.

People on the continent either tell you the truth or lie; in England they hardly ever lie, but they would not dream of telling you the truth. The English have no soul; they have the understatement instead. Continental people have sex life; the English have hot-water bottles. In England it is bad manners to be clever, to assert something confidently. It may be your personal view that two and two make four, but you must not state it in a self-assured way, because this is a democratic country and others may be of a different opinion. The advantage being that your battery gets exhausted, you cannot start up again and consequently the number of road accidents are greatly reduced. An English town is a vast conspiracy to mislead foreigners.
